What is MCP?
MCP is the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting an AI assistant to an outside system through a small server that exposes a defined set of tools the assistant can call. Odoo MCP is such a server for Odoo: Claude does not reach into the database on its own, it calls the tools the module exposes, which is what makes the scope of the connection something you configure.
Do I have to install anything inside Claude?
No separate installation is needed on the Claude side — Claude Desktop connects directly to the MCP module, configured through environment variables, and it works on any system that runs both Odoo and Claude. Because the configuration is per environment, a staging database and a production one can be connected as separate targets rather than sharing one setup.
Can it change data, or only read it?
Both. Alongside queries it offers data tools: import and export, duplicate detection, bulk operations and record validation. That is worth planning for before pointing it at production — start against a copy of the database, decide what the Odoo account it connects with is allowed to see and change, and widen the scope only once you trust the results.
Can it work across more than one Odoo database?
Yes. Odoo MCP supports multi-instance operation, so you can query, compare and sync between several Odoo environments side by side. That is useful for a group running one database per company or country and wanting a single answer across them, and for comparing a staging database against production before an upgrade or a data load.
What kinds of questions work best?
Ones that name a measure, a dimension and a period: revenue by product category for the last six months, stock on hand compared between two warehouses, customers with no order since a given date. Those map cleanly onto Odoo's models and come back as a table or a chart. Vague questions get vague answers, exactly as they would from a report builder.
