Configuring Accounting and Financial Settings in Odoo 17

Learn how to set up your chart of accounts, tax rules, journals, and currency settings for accurate and compliant accounting in Odoo 17.

· ERP practice 06 Nov 2023 · updated 01 May 2025

Configuring accounting in Odoo 17 is four settings taken in order: install the country's fiscal package so the chart of accounts is right, define the taxes and the fiscal positions that map them, create the journals that will record each kind of document, then set the fiscal year and its lock dates. Done before the first invoice, reporting is correct from day one.

Start by installing the Accounting module:

Apps → Search "Accounting" → Install

This app adds financial dashboards, journals, ledgers, taxes, and regulatory reports to your system.

Setting Up Your Chart of Accounts

Go to:

Accounting → Configuration → Chart of Accounts

You can:

  • 🗂️ Use Odoo's built-in country-specific templates
  • 📥 Import your own chart via CSV or Excel
  • 📝 Add or modify accounts with types (Asset, Liability, Income, etc.)

Each product, customer, or vendor transaction will post to one or more of these accounts.

Configuring Taxes and Fiscal Positions

Taxes can be set globally or per product/customer:

  • 💼 Configure tax rates: GST, VAT, Sales Tax
  • 🌍 Set up tax groups and inclusions (price-included or not)
  • 🔁 Use Fiscal Positions to map taxes based on customer region or B2B/B2C status

You can also configure tax reports, rounding methods, and exemptions easily from the dashboard.

Managing Journals and Document Types

Journals are used to classify and record transactions:

  • 📒 Sales Journal – for customer invoices
  • 📕 Purchase Journal – for vendor bills
  • 🏦 Bank Journal – for deposits and withdrawals
  • 💰 Cash Journal – for petty cash

Each journal has a code, default account, and document numbering rule. You can also control whether the journal appears on dashboards or reports.

Enabling Multi-Currency Support

To sell or buy internationally:

  • Enable multi-currency in Settings → Accounting
  • Select additional currencies and base exchange rate source (e.g., ECB)
  • Apply currencies per journal, partner, or transaction

Odoo will auto-convert amounts and track gains/losses in a dedicated account.

Defining Fiscal Years, Periods, and Lock Dates

Go to:

Accounting → Configuration → Settings

Here, you can:

  • 🗓️ Define your fiscal year (calendar or custom)
  • 🔒 Lock past entries after audit or reconciliation
  • 🧾 Set default journals, revenue recognition, and expense accounts

These settings ensure compliance, accurate reporting, and internal control.

Conclusion

Getting your accounting settings right in Odoo 17 is the first step toward powerful, real-time financial reporting. With smart defaults, compliance tools, and country-specific templates, Odoo makes it easy to align your books with your business model.

Questions we get asked

Can I change the chart of accounts after posting entries?

The country package is applied once, when accounting is installed, and cannot simply be swapped on a database that already holds posted entries. Individual accounts can still be added, renamed or archived at any time. If the country itself was chosen wrongly, the usual remedy is a fresh database rather than a conversion.

Does Odoo 17 Community include full accounting?

Community ships the Invoicing app: customer invoices, vendor bills, taxes, journals, payments and a chart of accounts. Bank statement synchronisation, the reconciliation widget, asset and deferred revenue management and the dynamic financial reports - balance sheet, profit and loss, tax return - belong to the Enterprise Accounting app and need a subscription.

How is a fiscal position different from a tax?

A tax is a rate together with the accounts it posts to. A fiscal position is a mapping rule that swaps one tax, and optionally one account, for another. Set it on a customer - export, inter-state, a different regime - and Odoo replaces the product's default tax on every line automatically, so you keep one price list instead of several.

What do lock dates actually do?

A lock date blocks the creation or modification of journal entries dated on or before it. Odoo 17 keeps separate dates for all users, for non-advisers and for tax returns, so a filed VAT or GST period can be frozen while the rest of the books stay open. Entries already posted are left untouched.

Can one Odoo 17 database handle several currencies?

Yes. Enable multi-currency in the accounting settings, activate the currencies you trade in, and choose a rate provider so rates refresh on a schedule. Invoices, bills and bank journals can then be held in a foreign currency, and Odoo posts the difference at payment time to the exchange gain and loss accounts you configure.
