A quotation in Odoo 17 is created in Sales, sent by email with a link to the customer portal, and becomes a sales order the moment the customer signs it or you confirm it. Confirmation is what triggers everything else: stock is reserved, a delivery is scheduled and the invoice can be drafted, all from the same record.

Questions we get asked
Can customers sign and pay a quotation online?
Yes, and both are settings on the quotation itself: online signature and online payment. The customer opens the portal link, signs in the browser and, where a payment provider is configured, pays a deposit or the full amount. Either action confirms the order automatically, with nobody in the back office touching it.
What is the difference between a quotation and a sales order?
They are one record in different states. It is a quotation while it is draft or sent, and a sales order once confirmed. Only confirmation reserves stock, creates the delivery and makes the order invoiceable, so an unconfirmed quote never touches your inventory figures or your books.
Do quotation templates save time?
Yes. A template holds a standard set of lines, optional upsell products, a validity period and the terms shown on the portal, so a recurring offer becomes one selection rather than several. Lines can still be edited afterwards on the individual quotation, and templates are managed under Sales, Configuration, Quotation Templates.
How does Odoo 17 decide when to invoice?
Each product's invoicing policy decides. Ordered quantities bills what was ordered as soon as the order is confirmed; delivered quantities bills only what has actually shipped. A down payment invoice can be raised at any point, and the order's invoicing status shows whether it is still to invoice, fully invoiced or has nothing to invoice.
Can I stop a quotation being valid forever?
Yes. Give the quotation an expiration date, or a validity period on its template, and Odoo marks it expired once that date passes and shows it as expired on the portal instead of letting the customer accept it. The quote also keeps the pricelist and payment terms it was made with, so an old offer never quietly picks up new prices.
