Creating and Managing E-Commerce Stores in Odoo 17

Build and manage a professional online store using Odoo 17's eCommerce platform — with product listings, payment integration, and seamless fulfillment.

· ERP practice 08 Dec 2023 · updated 01 May 2025

An Odoo 17 shop is the Website and eCommerce apps together: products from the same catalogue Sales and Inventory already use, a shop page edited with building blocks, a cart and checkout, a payment provider and delivery methods. Confirming an order creates the delivery and the invoice in the same database, so there is nothing to synchronise.

Creating and Managing E-Commerce Stores in Odoo 17

Activating the eCommerce Module

To get started with your online store:

Apps → Install "Website" and "eCommerce"

This gives you a full-featured website builder with product catalogs, shopping cart, payment integration, and customer portal features.

Adding Products and Categories

Go to:

Website → Products → Products → Create

Define for each product:

  • 🛍️ Name, description, and pricing
  • 📸 High-quality product images
  • 📦 Inventory tracking and stock levels
  • 🧾 Tax settings and variants (color, size)

Organize items into categories to make browsing easier for customers.

Designing Your Webshop

Use Odoo's website builder to customize your store:

  • 🎨 Drag-and-drop blocks for banners, testimonials, featured products
  • 🖥️ Mobile-responsive design templates
  • 📚 Add blog posts, landing pages, and contact forms

You can preview your design in real time and apply changes instantly — no coding needed.

Managing Checkout and Payment Options

Odoo offers a smooth checkout experience with:

  • 🛒 Guest or account-based checkout
  • 👳 Integrated payment gateways (Stripe, Razorpay, PayPal, etc.)
  • 🏷️ Coupons, promotions, and free shipping rules

You can also customize order confirmation pages and transactional emails.

Shipping and Inventory Integration

Link your store with backend logistics for automated fulfillment:

  • 🚚 Real-time shipping rates and delivery methods (UPS, FedEx, DHL)
  • 📦 Warehouse stock management (syncs with Sales & Inventory apps)
  • 📤 Auto-create delivery orders once a sale is confirmed

No need for external tools — everything is built into your ERP workflow.

Improving Customer Experience

Give shoppers the features they expect:

  • 👤 Secure login and customer portal
  • 📜 Order history and invoice downloads
  • 📬 Email notifications for order updates
  • 💬 Optional live chat or contact forms

You can also add product reviews, wishlist buttons, and real-time stock indicators.

Analytics, Reporting, and Sales Insights

Use Odoo's dashboards to track performance:

  • 📊 Sales by product, channel, or campaign
  • 📈 Abandoned cart tracking
  • 💰 Revenue, margin, and conversion trends

Export reports to Excel or connect with third-party BI tools for deeper insights.

Conclusion

Odoo 17 gives you a complete eCommerce solution — from website design to checkout, shipping, and accounting — all in one place. Whether you're starting a new webshop or scaling an existing one, Odoo keeps you in full control.

Questions we get asked

Which payment providers can Odoo 17 use?

Odoo 17 ships integrations for Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay, Adyen, Mollie, Authorize.net, Buckaroo, Mercado Pago and several regional providers, plus wire transfer for manual bank payments. Each one is enabled and given its API keys under the website's payment settings, and each can run in test mode before it goes live.

Does the shop show real stock levels?

It can. Each storable product has an out-of-stock setting that decides whether Odoo keeps selling once the quantity reaches zero and whether the available quantity is shown on the product page. The figure comes from the same Inventory app the warehouse uses: on hand, less what is already reserved for other orders.

Can customers check out without creating an account?

Yes. The sign-in policy is a setting with three options: guest checkout only, an optional account, or an account required before ordering. A guest still gets a contact record and a confirmation email, and their order is a normal sales order; they simply have no portal login until they set a password.

Can I sell from several websites with one product catalogue?

Yes. Multi-website gives each site its own domain, theme, currency and pricelist while drawing on a single product catalogue, and a product can be published everywhere or restricted to one site. Orders, customers and stock stay in one database, which keeps fulfilment and reporting in one place.

Does Odoo 17 recover abandoned carts?

It helps. A cart is flagged as abandoned after a delay you set in the eCommerce settings, and Odoo can send a recovery email from a template you edit. Abandoned carts also appear as a list in the website's orders, so they can be followed up by hand or fed into a marketing campaign.
