Odoo 17 handles recurring revenue with the Subscriptions app: a subscription is a sales order carrying a recurring plan, so Odoo re-invoices it each period, charges a saved payment method, renews or closes it on schedule, and reports monthly recurring revenue and churn. Subscriptions is an Odoo 17 Enterprise app and is not available in Odoo 17 Community.
Managing Subscriptions and Recurring Revenue in Odoo 17
Enabling the Subscriptions Module
To manage subscription-based services or products:
Apps → Install "Subscriptions"
This adds tools for recurring billing, contracts, plan setup, renewals, and subscription reporting.
Creating Subscription Products and Plans
Set up subscription offerings under:
Subscriptions → Configuration → Subscription Templates
Define each plan:
- 📦 Product name and description
- 📆 Recurrence (monthly, quarterly, yearly)
- 💵 Pricing and billing rules
- 🔁 Renewal behavior (auto/manual)
Link these to actual saleable products to allow customers to subscribe online or through sales orders.
Managing Customer Subscriptions
All active subscriptions are tracked under:
Subscriptions → Subscriptions
Each subscription contract shows:
- 🧾 Customer details
- 📅 Start/end date
- 💸 Invoicing history
- ⏳ Next renewal or expiration
Sales teams or account managers can intervene manually, pause, or close subscriptions as needed.
Automated Billing and Renewal Rules
Odoo handles all billing with no manual input:

- 📝 Upgrade, renew, or cancel subscriptions
This reduces churn and gives customers control while keeping your team focused on growth.

- 📊 Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR)
- 📉 Churn rate and lifetime value

You can segment data by sales rep, customer type, or subscription plan for better insights.

Questions we get asked
Is the Subscriptions app available in Odoo 17 Community?
No. Subscriptions, recurring plans, renewal and churn reporting and the recurring revenue dashboard are Odoo 17 Enterprise. Community users who bill on a cycle either repeat a sales order manually each period or install a third-party recurring-billing module. The pieces subscriptions rely on, such as payment providers and the customer portal, are in Community.
Can customers manage their own subscription in Odoo 17?
Only as far as the recurring plan allows. The plan has switches for whether a customer may close the subscription themselves and whether they may renew it from the portal, and the portal always lets them see the subscription and download past invoices. Leave those switches off and every change stays in the hands of your sales team.
How does Odoo 17 charge a subscription automatically?
The customer saves a payment method with a provider such as Stripe or Adyen the first time they pay. On each renewal date Odoo generates the invoice and charges that saved token, then emails the invoice out. When a charge fails, Odoo retries on a schedule and, after the number of days set on the plan, closes the subscription.
What does MRR mean in Odoo 17 Subscriptions?
Monthly recurring revenue: the value of every running subscription normalised to one month, so a yearly plan counts as a twelfth of its price. Odoo stores it per subscription and rolls it up on the dashboard, logging each change so the movement month to month splits into new business, expansion, contraction and churn rather than one net number.
