Accounting Showdown India: Odoo vs TallyPrime vs Zoho Books

Comprehensive comparison of top Indian accounting software in 2024. Explore features, pricing, GST compliance, and automation for Odoo, TallyPrime, and Zoho…

· ERP practice 18 May 2025

Choose on scope, not on feature ticks. Odoo suits an Indian business that wants GST-ready accounting in the same database as its sales, stock, purchasing and projects; a standalone cloud bookkeeping tool suits a small team whose accounts stand on their own; a desktop ledger stays attractive where the accountant already works in one.

Accounting Showdown India: Odoo vs TallyPrime vs Zoho Books

With India's growing digital economy and strict GST compliance requirements, businesses need modern accounting software that is both efficient and fully localized. In this 2024 comparison, we evaluate Odoo, TallyPrime, and Zoho Books — three prominent platforms widely used across Indian SMEs. Which one offers the best balance of pricing, GST handling, automation, and scalability? Let's find out.

1. Platform Overview

  • Odoo Accounting: A modern, cloud-ready accounting solution integrated into the Odoo ERP suite. Offers GST filing, e-Invoicing, inventory, CRM, and HR integration.
  • TallyPrime: A desktop-based legacy software used by Indian accountants. Widely trusted for compliance but lacks modern UI and online collaboration.
  • Zoho Books: A cloud-based tool designed for Indian businesses with strong mobile accessibility and GST features.

3. Usability & Modern Experience

  • Odoo: Web-based, modern dashboard with integrated modules. Ideal for teams across departments.
  • Tally: Traditional desktop interface. Functional but lacks mobile/cloud features.
  • Zoho Books: Streamlined for mobile users and accountants who work remotely.

4. Pricing Comparison

  • Odoo: ₹849/user/month for full suite. Free for 1 app.
  • TallyPrime: ₹18,000/year per license (single-user). Multi-user costs higher.
  • Zoho Books: ₹2,999–₹9,999/year depending on plan.

5. Scalability & Automation

  • Odoo supports automated workflows across sales, purchases, projects, inventory, and HR.
  • Tally requires manual entry and lacks real-time API integrations.
  • Zoho Books offers automation with limitations compared to ERP-level control.

Conclusion

TallyPrime remains a reliable desktop solution, but it's outdated for companies looking to go digital. Zoho Books is great for startups and freelancers. However, Odoo shines as an all-in-one modern ERP+Accounting platform — perfect for growing businesses that want full automation, cross-app visibility, and cost efficiency.

Questions we get asked

Does Odoo handle GST and e-invoicing in India?

Yes. Installing the Indian localisation adds an Indian chart of accounts, GST tax groups, HSN fields and Indian invoice formats, and separate modules submit e-invoices (IRN) and e-way bills to the government portals through a GSP, using an API username and password you set per GSTIN in Settings. Those parts are in Odoo Community; the GSTR-1 and GSTR-2B return reports ship with Odoo Enterprise.

Is Odoo Community enough for accounting, or do I need Enterprise?

Community includes the Invoicing app: chart of accounts, journals, customer invoices, vendor bills, taxes, payments and the basic ledgers. Enterprise adds the full Accounting app, which is where bank reconciliation tools, payment follow-ups, asset and deferred revenue handling, budgets and the Indian statutory reports live. If your accountant files returns from the system, budget for Enterprise.

What does moving from another accounting package to Odoo involve?

Most migrations move masters and opening balances rather than years of history. Export your ledgers, parties, items and closing trial balance to CSV or Excel, map them onto Odoo's import templates for accounts, contacts and products, then post opening balances as a single journal entry at an agreed cut-over date. Running the old system alongside for one month is the usual safety net.

Which fits a 40-person distributor best?

If stock valuation, purchase orders and invoices all have to agree, a business of that size is usually better served by an ERP. Odoo posts the stock move and the journal entry from the same document, so margin per order and stock value on a date come out of the system rather than a spreadsheet. A standalone accounting tool stays simpler when inventory is small or handled elsewhere.
