Is Odoo's Manufacturing app in the free Community edition?
Yes. MRP is LGPL and part of Odoo Community: multi-level bills of materials, work centres, routing operations, work orders, subcontracting, and the stock moves a manufacturing order generates. Odoo Enterprise adds the shop-floor tablet interface, the Quality app, PLM and the Enterprise accounting reports, so a small factory can run real production before paying a licence.
Does Odoo handle multi-level BOMs and subcontracting?
Yes, both in Community. A bill of materials can contain another manufactured product, so Odoo plans the sub-assembly's manufacturing order alongside its parent. Subcontracting is a setting on the BOM: Odoo raises the purchase order to the subcontractor, tracks the components you supply them with as your stock at their location, and receives the finished product back.
Can Odoo trace lots and expiry dates?
Yes. Products can be tracked by lot or by unique serial number, and the traceability report shows every move a lot made in both directions. With the expiration-date module, lots carry best-before, expiry, removal and alert dates, and a location set to FEFO issues the closest to expiry first. All of this is in the Community Inventory app; the Quality app is Enterprise.
When is Odoo not the right answer?
When you need certified, out-of-the-box process depth that Odoo would have to be built up to: heavily regulated batch or process manufacturing, complex engineer-to-order costing, or a global group with dozens of statutory ledgers. In those cases the licence saving is smaller than the cost of building and then maintaining the gap through every upgrade.
