Odoo 20 was unveiled by Fabien Pinckaers in the opening keynote of Odoo Experience in Brussels on 24 September 2026, and Odoo has now published the official Odoo 20 release notes. The biggest changes are AI agents that can create and update records, an offline mode, a simpler access-rights model and a long list of accounting and localisation work. Odoo also added a cheaper Light User licence. The release notes also say that all AI features now need credits bought through IAP.
Two days ago we wrote what we knew before the release and promised to come back once the release notes were out. This is that follow-up, written for businesses deciding what Odoo 20 means for them rather than for developers.
AI agents in Odoo 20: from answering to acting
In Odoo 19, AI was mostly something you asked. The Odoo 20 release notes describe agents that do the work. The items that matter most for a business user:
- Agents create and update records. An agent can generate records, including from instructions in an uploaded PDF, and modify existing ones. A client's specification can become a project and its tasks.
- Agents run on a schedule. Automated and scheduled actions can summon an agent, so a routine check can run without anyone asking for it.
- Agents ask before going too far. Responses can include buttons for questions, permissions and suggestions. When an agent hits its limit of tool calls, it asks the user before continuing.
- Files and voice. You can question a file while previewing it, send documents into an agent chat, and dictate requests.
- MCP. The release notes say you can "connect Odoo to anything" through MCP (Model Context Protocol), the standard way AI tools talk to other systems.
- Housekeeping. Odoo picks the AI model for each task automatically. Conversations are kept for 30 days after the last message, and "topics" are renamed "skills".
Everyday changes every Odoo user will notice
The general section of the release notes is long. These are the changes users will notice first:

| Tax included or excluded on orders | Switch how prices display on an order or invoice, with a per-line tax override. |

| Material Symbols icons | Font Awesome is replaced across the interface. Screenshots in your training material will look out of date. |
One change deserves its own line: simplified access rights. Odoo 20 removes record rules and moves the domain onto the access right itself. For a standard database that is simpler to manage. If you have custom modules with their own record rules, it is the change most likely to need developer time in your upgrade. It matches the "redesigned and unified security model" that Odoo's framework talk announced before the release.
Accounting changes in Odoo 20
Accounting has one of the longest sections in the release notes. The changes most finance teams will notice:
- Bank consistency. Everything that touches a bank account has to originate from a bank transaction, which keeps the books and the bank in step.
- Parent accounts replace account groups in the chart of accounts.
- Bill line prediction uses history and labels to fill vendor bills.
- Customer invoice reminders, manual and automatic.
- Reconciliation against several accounts at once, and analytic distribution on write-offs.
- Simpler asset models built around depreciation logic, with depreciation by rate.
- Paying bills from Odoo through a payment-initiation (PISP) interface, where your bank and country support it.
- Multi-ledger consolidation improvements for groups reporting across companies.
What Odoo 20 changes for Indian companies
Most of our clients run the Indian localisation, so we read that section first. The release notes list five India changes:
- Credit notes for price adjustments can be issued directly.
- A bill of entry flow for imports simplifies recording customs duty on imported goods.
- More flexible TDS: apply "TDS & Payment", "TDS Only" or "Payment Only".
- Composition Taxpayers are now covered by GST compliance, with dedicated support for the Composition Scheme.
- Schedule III, Division I financial statements with the prescribed presentation, classification and disclosures.
For importers and small businesses on the Composition Scheme, these are reasons to look at Odoo 20 early. Check each one against your own filings on a test database before relying on it.
Sales, website, inventory and HR highlights
CRM and eCommerce
CRM gets lead-distribution rules (always, limited rotation or out of rotation), a pipeline switcher per team, and upsells or renewals created straight from a lead's existing subscriptions. Lead generation now uses the Dun & Bradstreet database in place of Clearbit. eCommerce has one of the longest lists in the release: AI-assisted product editing, customer returns through the portal, preferred delivery dates, minimum order quantities, automatic unpublishing when stock runs out, WhatsApp abandoned-cart messages, and selling without installing the Inventory app.
Inventory and barcode
The Barcode app gets bulk lot and serial generation, manual lot entry, batch receipts from one vendor, product creation by scanning, and the option to count a total instead of scanning each unit. Light Users can be limited to the Barcode app, which pairs with the new licence below.
HR, attendance and Discuss
Attendance adds a photo at check-in, automatic check-out times, overtime rulesets with public-holiday rates, and an overtime analysis report. Appraisals get bulk actions and 360 feedback from external contacts. Discuss adds polls, channel categories and favourites. The Phone app shows who is on a call and can record calls with a transcript and summary.
Point of Sale
The POS section of the release notes is mostly country e-invoicing (Egypt, Malaysia, Pakistan, Vietnam and others). The restaurant and kiosk work Odoo trailed before the release, including a floor-plan editor, reservations, self-ordering and WhatsApp receipts, is what to test if you run a restaurant or store.
Odoo 20 pricing and the new Light User
The pricing change that affects most companies is a new user type. Odoo's pricing page describes a Light User as "an employee without application access or a user with limited access". It shows Rs 195 per month in India.

For companies with many shop-floor, store or warehouse staff who only record their own time, leave or scans, the Light User can cut the licence bill noticeably. Several recaps say Light Users need Odoo 20 and also report changes to other plan prices. We couldn't confirm either on odoo.com, so ask Odoo or your partner for a quote on your own user mix.
The cheapest Odoo 20 upgrade is often not new features but moving the right people onto Light User licences.
What we left out, and why
Some Odoo 20 feature lists circulating this week mention an "OWL 3.0" web client, native GraphQL endpoints and Bluetooth thermal printing for offline POS. None of these appear in the release notes we read, and at least one such list was published weeks before the keynote. They may turn up in the code or the developer documentation later. Until then, we don't treat them as announced.
Should you upgrade to Odoo 20 now?
For most live databases, not in the first weeks. The pattern we recommend every year still holds:
- Request a test upgrade of a copy of your database and check that your custom modules install on 20.0.
- Go through the access-rights change with whoever maintains your custom code, since record rules are gone.
- Test your localisation, including the India items above, against real transactions.
- Price the AI credits and Light Users for your user mix before you count on either.
- Pick a go-live date away from month-end and your GST filing dates.

What are the main new features in Odoo 20?
According to the official release notes, the headline changes are AI agents that can create and update records, run on a schedule and connect to other tools through MCP; an offline mode; activities assigned to roles; simplified access rights without record rules; a large accounting update; and many localisation changes. For Indian companies these include a bill of entry flow, flexible TDS, Composition Scheme support and Schedule III statements.
Is AI free in Odoo 20?
Not entirely. The Odoo 20 release notes state that all AI features now need credits, which are bought through In-App Purchase (IAP). Odoo's pricing page lists Agentic AI under the Custom plan and says IAP credits are not included in any plan. Some recaps of the keynote describe AI as included in the subscription, so confirm the terms for your own contract before budgeting.
What is an Odoo Light User?
A Light User is a lower-cost Odoo licence for employees who need little or no application access. Odoo's pricing page shows it at Rs 195 per month in India. A Light User can manage their own HR items such as leave, expenses and attendance, view their planning, log in to a POS session, read Knowledge and scan barcodes. They cannot use Sales, Purchase, Projects or Accounting.
Will my custom modules work on Odoo 20?
Not without checking. Custom modules have to be migrated to every new major version, and Odoo 20 changes the access-rights model by removing record rules and putting domains on access rights. Modules that define their own record rules, or rely on the old mail tracking values, are the most likely to need rework. Run a test upgrade and install every custom module on 20.0 before setting a go-live date.
