Upgrade to Odoo 19 now or wait for Odoo 20?

If you are on Odoo 16 or 17, upgrade to Odoo 19 now rather than waiting for Odoo 20. Odoo 16 left standard support in September 2025, and Odoo 17 is due to leave it this month. If you are on Odoo 18, you have until September 2027, so waiting and moving straight to Odoo 20 once it has settled is a sound plan.

That is the short version. The rest of this post explains the reasoning, and the situations that change the answer: heavy customisation, Odoo Online's upgrade rules, Community edition, and your own accounting calendar. We don't use any Odoo 20 features in this reasoning, because as of 22 September 2026 Odoo hasn't published them. For what is known so far, see what we know before the release.

Where each version stands on support

Odoo gives each major version three years of standard support, which covers helpdesk support, bug fixes and security updates. After that, extended support is available on Odoo.sh and on-premise for a mandatory additional fee. These are the dates Odoo publishes today:

If you are on Odoo 16

Don't wait. Your version has been out of standard support for a year. On Odoo.sh or on-premise that means paying for extended support or running without bug and security fixes. On Odoo Online, Odoo's table no longer shows 16 as supported at all.

Waiting for Odoo 20 doesn't make the jump smaller. It adds one more version of change to absorb. Odoo's upgrade service lets you go straight from 16 to 19. Once you are on 19, the later move to 20 is a single step. In our experience that pair of upgrades is less risky than one long jump made in a hurry once 20 is out.

If you are on Odoo 17

Standard support for 17 is planned to end this month. Moving to 19 now puts you on a version supported until September 2028. It has also had a year of bug fixes since its release in September 2025.

The argument for waiting is "we only upgrade once". It sounds efficient, but in practice it means running on an unsupported version while you wait. You also wait for Odoo 20 to settle, and for any third-party modules you use to be published for 20. That wait is realistically several months beyond the release date. If your custom module list is short, go to 19 now. If it is long, start the inventory in our readiness checklist today, whichever target you choose.

If you are on Odoo 18

You are the one group for whom waiting is a real option. Odoo 18 is in standard support until September 2027, so you can let Odoo 20 be released, watch its first bug-fix months, check that your third-party modules are available for it, and upgrade once, straight to 20.

Two reasons to move to 19 anyway. First, you need something 19 already has, most often the AI app and AI fields. Second, you have a quiet window now and expect a busy 2027. Our Odoo 19 AI guide shows what that app does today, so you can judge whether it is worth an upgrade on its own.

Situations that change the answer

• Odoo Online. Odoo decides much of the timing for you. Major versions must be upgraded every two years, and intermediate versions a few weeks after the next one comes out. Odoo notifies you in the database before a mandatory upgrade and triggers it automatically if you don't act. Use that window to request a test upgrade.
• Heavy customisation. The more custom modules you run, the more each version hop costs, because every module has to be ported and tested. That makes "one hop, not two" more tempting. It also makes running unsupported code for longer more dangerous. For large codebases, get the module-by-module estimate first, then decide.
• Community edition. Odoo's upgrade platform asks for an Enterprise subscription code. Community users either migrate with the community-maintained OpenUpgrade project or reimplement. Both take more effort per hop, which pushes Community users towards fewer, better-planned upgrades.
• Already on Odoo 19. There is nothing to decide this year. Standard support is planned to run until September 2028. Read the Odoo 20 release notes when they are out, run a test upgrade once your modules are available for 20, and move when that test is clean.
• Your calendar. For Indian companies on an April–March financial year, don't go live on a new version during year-end closing or around GST return deadlines. A September or October decision usually means a go-live between November and January, or waiting until after the books are closed.

How to make the decision in one meeting

1. Write down your version and hosting. These two facts decide most of the answer, using the table above.
2. Count custom and third-party modules. A rough count is enough to see whether you are facing weeks of work or months.
3. Name the features you need. Only features in the released Odoo 19 count. Odoo 20 features don't count until the release notes are out.
4. Check your calendar. Block out closing, filing and peak-season dates.
5. Request a test upgrade. Nothing settles the argument faster than your own database running on the target version.
